With some fabulous golden bays on your doorstep, you don’t have to travel far to enjoy a beautiful beach with lovely waters. The cosmopolitan villages of Agia Marina (7km) and Platanias (8,9km) are just a short drive away and they are fully organized, offering many tavernas, restaurants, souvenir shops, cafe bars and many other local enterprises, as well as a medical center, drugstores, police station, banks and gas stations. The 4 kilometers of the white shining sandy beaches, have given to Platanias beach for several years in the row, the blue flag, a hallmark of quality from the EU for clear and organized beaches. On the beach you will find everything that is provided on well organized beaches, such as beach bars, umbrellas, showers, snack bars, lifeguards, water sports etc. On the east side of the local harbor, close to Agia Marina, you can enjoy swimming in the several small artificial coves. During summer nights, the night clubs in the area host thousands of people, both Greeks and foreigners, who dance till dawn.
Marathi and Loutraki beaches are located on the Akrotiri peninsula, not far from Chania airport and also offer picturesque sandy organised bays with shallow waters and beautiful scenery with a backdrop of a handful of traditional waterside tavernas. Or head to the south coast and take a boat to Loutro, a beautiful small bay set beneath a white washed village which cascades down the mountainside or swim in the crystal waters of Marmara. There is so much to see, your only choice is to come back!
Drive further away, on the west part of Chania prefecture and witness the tropical pink sands and turquoise water of Elafonissi beach or collect shells on the wonderful beach of Falassarna.
-A visit to the world famous Elafonisi beach with its pink sand and beautiful landscape is worth considering. Please note that between 11:00-13:00 the beach is really crowded, so you will better enjoy it early in the morning or during the afternoon. You can arrange to arrive at 16:00 or later, as most tourists depart from the beach around 16:00 with buses.
- Falasarna (or Phalasarna) beach is one of the most famous beaches in Greece, which has been awarded as the best beach of Crete and voted as one of the 10 best beaches in Europe in the past, with crystal waters and golden sand and also worth visiting. Not only does it boast pink sand patches, aquamarine waters and an amazing landscape, but it is also large enough to allow some privacy.
- It’s highly recommended as well to make a day trip to Balos lagoon and Gramvousa Isle, which are really beautiful and resembling Caribbean beaches and have an exotic vibe! The clear blue waters and sandy beaches are amazing and you will enjoy the sun and sea. These locations are only accessible by boat departing daily from Kissamos town and it’s recommended that you go there on a week day, as weekends can be quite crowded.
